The difference from the fighters above is what automation asks for: a named character at a set level, not a damage upgrade. Once a shop is automated it earns while the app is closed. The tap is there when you feel like it; the one tapping challenge is the portal sequence that ends an episode. Each entry is judged on three things: what a tap actually does, how soon the game starts running without you, and how fairly it earns its money.

What is the difference between a tapping game and a clicker game?
The device. A clicker game is the PC and browser name for the genre, where a mouse click builds cookies, damage or cash. A tapping game is the same idea on a phone, where the tap does the work. The games are often the same: Clicker Heroes and Cookie Clicker both have phone versions, and Tap Titans 2 plays on PC through emulators.
Are tap-away puzzle games tapping games?
Not in the sense used here. Tap-away and tile-sorting puzzles are one-off levels where a tap removes a block. The tapping games on this list are progression games where every tap adds to something that keeps growing, and most of them eventually run without you.
